Michael Olise sidelined by suspension for Arsenal game; Harry Kane calls it ‘a shame’

Michael Olise received a second yellow card in the Champions League on Tuesday, earning a red card that rules him out of Bayern Munich’s next match against Arsenal. The France international’s dismissal helped Viking salvage a 3-3 draw in Stavanger, Norway.

Olise was already holding a yellow card for a tactical foul that stopped a Viking counter-attack when he tossed the ball he was holding at Viking captain Zlatko Tripic‘s head. The referee showed him a second booking within seconds, and the Norwegian home crowd cheered. It was Olise’s first career sending-off in a senior game.

Bayern led 3-2 at the time, but the dismissal changed the match. Viking pushed forward and grabbed a stunning equaliser in the 90th minute. Tripic delivered the cross, and Herman Haugen headed home.

Kane backs Olise to learn from mistake

Harry Kane had earlier put Bayern in control with a thrilling comeback. Bayern trailed 2-0 before scoring two goals in quick succession in the second half, both from Kane, who has now scored in nine consecutive Champions League games. Luis Díaz had given Bayern a third goal just before Olise was sent off.

Kane admitted that Olise would have to take responsibility for his actions. “He’ll have to take responsibility obviously, he’ll have to learn from it,” Kane said. “It’s a shame because obviously we have big games coming up in the Champions League now and he’s going to be gutted to miss those games. But this is football. Sometimes mistakes can happen, it’s life.”

Bayern now face Premier League champions Arsenal next week, and Olise will miss that fixture. The draw also halts the momentum Bayern built last month, when they opened their Champions League campaign with a 5-0 win over Bodø/Glimt, another Norwegian side.

“We should have won the game with the second-half performance,” Kane added. “You take the point and you move on.”
